Military gun salutes and a visit to a nursery school marked the Queen’s accession to the throne, 60 years ago today. To mark the first Diamond Jubilee since Queen Victoria 115 years ago, the Queen renewed her dedication to the service of the nation, while also expressing her hope that this “special year” will bring families and communities closer together.

Meanwhile, gun salutes were fired at the Tower of London today, as well as other parts of the United Kingdom.

A Royal Salute is commonly made up of 21 rounds, but the gun salute from the Tower comprised 62 rounds, a tradition specific to the Tower to celebrate Royal Anniversaries.
